ARIZONA’S MARKKANEN IS OSCAR ROBERTSON NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected the Arizona’s Lauri Markkanen as its Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Jan. 22. The USBWA’s weekly honor is presented by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. Markkanen, 7-0 forward from Jyväskylä, Finland, averaged 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in a road sweep of USC and UCLA, shooting 14-of-22 from the field (.636) and 8-of-10 (.800) behind the arc.

UCONN’S SAMUELSON IS ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected UConn guard/forward Katie Lou Samuelson as its Ann Meyers Drysdale Women’s National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Jan. 22. The USBWA’s weekly honor will be handed out each Tuesday through mid-February this season. Samuelson, a 6-3 sophomore from Huntingdon Beach, Calif., averaged 33 points for the top-ranked and unbeaten Huskies in two wins, shooting 24-36 from the field for a 66.7 percentage, also shooting 57.9 percent on attempted 3-pointers.

VILLANOVA’S GEDAKA IS WOMEN’S NATIONAL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected Villanova forward Mary Gedaka as its Women’s National Freshman of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Jan. 22. The USBWA’s weekly honor will be handed out each Tuesday through mid-February. Gedaka, a 6-1 forward from Mullica Hill, N.J., averaged 14.7 points overall in three games and 19.5 points in a pair of Big East road wins at Butler and Xavier.

USBWA UNVEILS ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE AWARD MIDSEASON WATCH LIST

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced midseason watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award (Women’s National Player of the Year). Balloting for the USBWA’s Women’s All-America Team and the association’s individual awards will take place in March. The Ann Myers Drysdale Award, National Coach of the Year and the Freshman of the Year awards will be presented at a news conference in conjunction with the Women’s Final Four in Dallas.

SABIN, MURPHY ARE DIVISION III NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Ty Sabin of Ripon College (Ripon, Wis.) and Lisa Murphy of Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the week ending January 22.
