I can’t really start off by saying we’ve had an amazing season because I really wouldn’t know. Having to move before my senior year began was hectic and awkward for me. But I was able to maintain; not really expecting to come back to my old school, I had to come home in December. After my mom passed, I was right back at my old stomping grounds. I really didn’t want to play basketball anymore but I did it anyways because this is what I love to do; and after maybe like 3 weeks of being home, I was able to get back on the team and play.
As playoffs progressed I was able to fall back into the swing of things; actually everyone told me I was that missing piece to a well rounded team that was going take us to another championship. The first four games of playoffs were rather “easy”, such as it was last year. But once we got to the semi-finals is when the real game time came. Only winning by 1 point, we overcame a 13 point deficit to get the win. I was named the Regional Tournament MVP!
Everyone was actually right, March 16th, my team, Harding University High School Lady Rams, were back in the State Championship game, this time against Chapel Hill High School. The entire time during our playoff run, we never received any love from the newspapers and coaches around but it never stopped us from chasing our goal, which was to win another championship. Our motto this year was “Heart” something a lot of teams that we played just didn’t have. We refused to lie down once we were down because we knew the 2nd ring would be much sweeter than the first one. Only winning by 4 points, I think it was honestly the worst game that I’ve had all season. Others seemed to think different because I was again awarded Finals MVP, for the second year in a row.
I never really thought this would happen again, even coming back to Charlotte and playing for my old school. But we had the will and desire to win and we became such a strong family through each adversity. I’m just really blessed to have been a part of such a group of people as the caliber of my team that I was playing for. It was fun for me and I loved it and I love my team. I’m glad to say we are the BACK 2 BACK State Champs and we made history in North Carolina!!!!
